Philosophy and Areas of Practice

I work with older adolescents (generally 15 years or older) and adults, generally in one-on-one sessions. I am open to family or friends attending sessions with a client if that is my client's preference and with their permission. My areas of practice include mood disorders (such as depression, dysthymia and bipolar disorders), anxiety (such as generalised anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorders), post-traumatic stress and dissociative disorders, substance use concerns, emotion and behavioural regulation (such as anger management), sleep disorders and persistent pain. In addition, I work with clients who are dealing with a range of life issues such as relationship difficulties, self-esteem and self-confidence, work stresses and work-life balance, grief and loss, uncertainty about life direction and other important life events that we all face from time to time. I also work with LGBTQ+ clients who are processing or exploring areas including sexual orientation and identity.

My approach to my practice in psychology is to strive to best meet the unique concerns of each client by blending a range of techniques with an underlying humanist, feminist and client-centred perspective. This perspective includes an emphasis on client rights, empowerment and dignity. I use specific therapeutic approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy, emotion-focussed processing and other process experiential techniques, acceptance and commitment strategies, solution-focussed approaches and psychodynamic interventions. I also use supportive and advocacy interventions as appropriate.
